About 500 executives and ship owners from the maritime industry will participate in the National Shipping 2000 Congress and Exhibition to be held at the grand ballroom of the Century Park Hotel from Sept. 28 to 30.
The congress, to be held in conjunction with the celebration of World Maritime Day, will have as its theme, "Building Responsible Maritime Partnerships." It is the first ever large-scale gathering of maritime bigwigs in a forum within which numerous developments are expected to be accomplished.
According to congress chairman Edgardo Lacson, the role of the shipping sector becomes even more crucial in enhancing the internal dynamics of its economy, from the movement of its vast resources, to domestic and foreign trade and commerce, communication and transport.
"As the world moves further into this new millennium, the variable demands on the shipping sector necessitates such developments that would enable it to reinforce its evolving role and the attendant responsibilities," Lacson said.
"The state of preparedness as well as the capacity to adapt therefore allows for development in such diverse areas as security and contingencies on life and cargo, breakthroughs and advancements in transport, environmental concerns, while relentlessly forging new partnerships, strengthening new ones, and maintaining international links and goodwill relations," he added.
President Estrada, together with members of his Cabinet, will be the congress' guest of honor and keynote speaker in the closing ceremonies.
There will also be a trade exhibit during the affair, detailing the various technological advancements aimed at promoting safety, efficiency and environmental protection, and will be manned by representatives from different maritime organizations and service providers.
